Los Angeles County deputy kills man allegedly carrying gun

Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives on Friday were investigating a deputy’s fatal shooting of a young man who reportedly was working as a security guard at a local auto body shop.

The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. Thursday in the Gardena area.

Local news media showed a small group identified as family members in an emotional confrontation with deputies guarding the scene.

A Sheriff’s Department statement did not identify the man or give specific details of why the shooting occurred.

The statement said deputies observed the man, he “produced a firearm” and then ran between two businesses.

“A short foot pursuit ensued and at the conclusion, the deputies contacted the suspect and a deputy involved shooting occurred,” it said.

The man was shot in the upper torso and died at the scene.

The department said a handgun was recovered. A KABC-TV news helicopter showed a gun on the ground.

Andrew Heney, identified by KCBS-TV as the shop owner, said the business had a security guard out front because of problems with taggers.

Sheriff’s Lt. Charles Calderaro told reporters the man was not wearing a security guard uniform when deputies saw him and they did not have information regarding his occupation.

Calderaro said one deputy fired.
