The demand for food from the Meals on Wheels has doubled among most programs in America since February, according to the CEO Ellie Hollander.
At the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, program staff deliver 700 home delivered meals per day and there are new requests added every day. Most of the recipients are in their 80s and 90s and many live alone.
If no one answers the door at the scheduled time, the delivery drivers let 'Catholic Charities Of New York' know so they can do a welfare check in case someone has died.
Meals on Wheels is partly funded by the federal government and partly funded by private sources.
Many of the Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers who deliver the food are in the same high-risk age group as those people to whom they are delivering the food, so now the food is placed at the doorstep instead of handed to the recipient.
