US President Donald Trump has called off a secret summit with Taliban leers and his Afghan counterpart. Pompeo on US-Taliban peace talks
Trump in a series of tweets on Saturday disclosed that he was to meet Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and senior Taliban leers on Sunday at his Camp David retreat. However, he cancelled meeting after Taliban mitted that it was behind a suicide car bomb attack Thursday that h killed an American soldier and 11 ors in capital of Kabul. This has dealt a significant blow to months-long negotiations that were nearing a peace agreement. Pompeo said Trump ministration has recalled envoy Zalmay Khalilz, who has been negotiating with Taliban leers for months in Qatar. He frur ded that it would be up to insurgent group wher talks would resume.

Speaking to US media, Pompeo said, "We ( US and Taliban) have been fighting and talking in a way that America often doesn't do. It's what's driven us to be able to have success at negotiating table that we were beginning to have. But we finally reached a point where we were close (to enter a deal)."
"We'd me real progress and n Taliban failed to live up to a series of commitments that y h me. And when that (latest terrorist strike that killed one US soldier) happened, President Trump said I'm t going to take that deal, I'm t going to work with someone that can't deliver on ir commitments." Pompeo said ded in his media interview.

Trump's move comes after nine rounds of talks between US and Taliban representatives, held in Doha. Trump's US negotiator Zalmay h anunced a peace deal "in principle" with Taliban on Monday. Khalilz is w on his way back to US, Pompeo said.
proposed deal, Pompeo h said, was 'just a piece of paper'. "We have to actually see that change in behaviour. And when we saw this activity, when we saw this action when we were closing in on a solution and closing in on opportunity for president to actually meet with decision-makers that can actually deliver that reconciliation and peace to Afghan people, President Trump said that's eugh, we're t going to do that, we're t going to reward that behaviour and broke it off," top American diplomat explained to media.

" President hasn't me a decision on that yet. We'll be talking about that in coming day. President Donald Trump has been very clear, we spend, goodness over USD30 billion a year in Afghanistan. As you well kw, we have terror threats from lots of parts of world, t just from Afghanistan unfortunately, he said. re are still challenges, ISIS is re as well. But President Trump is going to focus with secretary of defence. y will think about making sure that we have right force posture to deliver on president's objectives to protect America from terror threats everywhere y emanate from, including Afghanistan. And we'll have to make decision about what right force posture in Afghanistan will be going forward," Pompeo said.
US opts to maintain presence in Afghanistan
Pompeo said, US will conduct a mission in Afghanistan in a way that reduces risk to American people, right number, force posture, nature of forces, and continuing to train and assist mission for Afghan forces, so y can take fight to Taliban such that we can ultimately get peace and reconciliation. Responding to a question on peace talks with Taliban, Pompeo said that y h me ermous progress over last months working with Afghan government of national unity, or Afghans as well as with Taliban. But ministration got to protect American national security interests so that terror can never strike again from Afghanistan, at same time reduce America's treasure and blood.

"We have been making progress. We've h a commitment from Taliban that said that y would break with Al Qaeda publicly and permanently, we h a commitment that said that y would reduce violence or that y would for first time. You were in an ministration that tried to get Afghans to sit at table toger, he said. We h a commitment that y would meet in Oslo to begin reconciliation conversation. And n Taliban overreached. y killed an American in an effort to gain lever at negotiating table. And President Trump said eugh," Pompeo said.
