Some prominent Republicans are expressing concern over former President Donald Trump 's increasing association with far-right activist Laura Loomer, fearing it indicates a troubling shift towards conspiracy theories and racism within his inner circle.

Loomer, known for her extreme views and controversial statements, has been gaining more access to Trump in recent weeks. On Thursday, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), both Trump allies, voiced their unease about Loomer's influence.

Graham criticized Loomer’s growing presence, stating, "Marjorie Taylor Greene is right. I don't say that a lot... but the history of this person is just really toxic...I don't think it's helpful at all." Graham’s comments reflect broader concerns among Republicans that Loomer's involvement could harm Trump’s image.

A quick look at the context

The alarm grew louder following a racist post Loomer made about Vice President Kamala Harris this week. Loomer suggested that if Harris were elected president, the White House would "smell like curry & White House speeches will be facilitated via a call center," referencing Harris' Indian heritage. Greene condemned Loomer's remarks on social media, calling them "appalling and extremely racist." Greene added, "This does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA. This does not represent President Trump. This type of behavior should not be tolerated ever."

It is worth adding that Vivek Ramaswamy, someone quite popular amongst Republicans, is also Indian by ethnicity and so is J.D. Vance's wife. It is unclear what Mr. Ramaswamy and Mr. Vance make of Loomer's remarks.

Here is what you need to know

Loomer, who has failed to win congressional seats twice in Florida, has become a frequent guest at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. She recently accompanied Trump on his plane to the debate in Philadelphia and appeared with him at the 9/11 memorial ceremonies in New York City and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Her presence at these events, particularly at the 9/11 ceremonies, drew criticism from several Republicans who support Trump.

The growing concern among Trump’s allies signals a deeper worry about the impact of Loomer's influence and its potential effects on the former president's campaign and reputation.
