'Tremendous' progress in US-China trade talks: President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump hailed "tremendous progress" in US-China trade negotiations on January 31 and Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that their relations were at a "critical" stage, with one month left to settle their tariff dispute.

President Donald Trump hailed "tremendous progress" in US-China tre negotiations on January 31 and Chinese leer Xi Jinping said that ir relations were at a "critical" st, with one month left to settle ir tariff dispute.

"You will be going early February with your group to China," Trump said in White House to negotiators after y spent a second day of talks with Chinese counterparts.

In a letter from Xi to Trump that was re out by Chinese delegation, Xi said relations were at a "critical" st and that he hoped "our two sides will continue to work with mutual respect."

Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier Liu He was in Washington for complex talks on resolving a tre war between world's two biggest ecomies.

Washington has set a deline of March 1 for China to agree to deep reforms ending what White House says are unfair tre practices, including protectionism and systematic intellectual property ft.

Trump said relations between two countries are "very, very good."

If re is deal, though, he says tariffs alrey imposed on $200 billion in Chinese imports will rise from current 10 per cent to 25 per cent.

US tre negotiator Robert Lighthizer said that although re h been "progress..., we have much work to do." Talks on Thursday focused on structural issues and how to enforce any agreement, he said.

"It's impossible for me to predict success but... it could happen," Lighthizer said.

Earlier, Trump said that he did t want a half-hearted deal that only got China to open up tre on certain products.

"I have to do real deal. I have to open up China. We're open to m, y have to be open to us," Trump said.

"It's going to be a very comprehensive deal. We're going to cover everything." "I think we can do it by March 1. Can you get it down on paper by March 1? I don't kw," Trump said.

He also said that any final deal would probably require a meeting between him and Xi.

Later, he said that such a summit hasn't been set up yet.

Washington and Beijing since last year have exchanged tit-for-tat tariffs on more than USD 360 billion in two-way tre, putting downward pressure on Chinese ecomy, where growth is slowing.
