Trump admin to designate Houthis as terrorists despite calls to reverse decision

The Trump admin is expected to go ahead with its announcement of designating the Houthis as terrorists, which is likely to further deteriorate the situation.

Trump ministration is expected to go ahe with its anuncement of designating Houthi group in Yemen as a terrorist organisation, which is likely to furr deteriorate situation in war-torn country. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on January 10 anunced that US government would designate Ansar Allah movement (Houthis) as a terrorist organisation, which would take effect from January 19, a day before Trump will vacate White House for incoming Biden ministration.

However, United Nations and experts have warned that decision will likely deteriorate humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Mark Lowcock, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told Security Council recently that Yemen is on brink of famine likes of which world has t seen in 40 years and US FTO designation of Houthis will accelerate situation. Meanwhile, World Food Programme has said that US FTO designation of Houthis will mean " food, medicines, fuel, and end of crisis insight".

conflict in Yemen was sparked in 2014 after Houthis began a series of protests against government over rising fuel prices. After military crackdown on protesters, Houthis launched an armed rebellion, which resulted in group taking control of capital Sana'a. Ors from region intervened in war, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Iran. While Saudis and UAE supported President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hi, Iran backed Shia Houthis in war.

Most recently, an attack was launched against ministers of newly-formed cabinet in Yemen. After flight, carrying members of Yemeni government, landed at en International Airport, gunfire and explosion rocked premises killing at least 28 people. Passengers of plane escaped unhurt, following which cabinet members were taken to Masquid Palace, where again an attack took place. This was cited by Pompeo during recent anuncement of designating Houthis as a terrorist organisation. Houthis, however, denied responsibility for attack.
