Trump made a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan on Thanksgiving. The US President also hinted on renewed peace talks with the terror group Taliban.

On Thanksgiving, US President Donald Trump me an unanunced visit to Afghanistan and met US troops at Bagram airbase outside capital Kabul. As per reports, Trump served turkey to troops in a cafeteria, posed for photographs, and delivered remarks in a hangar in a visit which lasted for three and a half hours. He also met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. re are about 13,000 US troops in Afghanistan, 18 years after United States inved retaliating over 9/11 attacks. Earlier in 2019, United States reached a deal with Taliban insurgents to pull troops from country in return for security guarantees. Yet hopes of reconciliation diminished as Trump in Septemeber said that talks are "de" over killing of a US soldier. Recent developments suggest that talks could be renewed. Though terror group has refused any negotiations with Afghan government, diplomatic efforts continue to foster dialogue for a peace deal.

Trump hinted on a deal with Taliban

Trump travelled with Republican Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming and a small clutch of aides, including his acting Chief of Staff, Press Secretary and National Security viser and appeared in good spirits. He was escorted around base by heavily armed soldiers. First ly Melania Trump did t make trip unlike last year’s post-Christmas visit to Iraq. During his visit, Trump anunced that U.S. and Taliban have been engd in peace talks and insisted Taliban want to make a deal. It was t clear how long or substantive US reengment with Taliban has been.

“We’re meeting with m. And we’re saying it has to be a cease-fire. And y don’t want to do a cease-fire, but w y do want to do a cease-fire, I believe ... and we’ll see what happens,” Trump said.

Trump flew to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware last week to oversee transfer of remains of two Army officers killed when ir helicopter crashed as y provided security for troops in Afghanistan. Taliban still controls about half of country, staging frequent attacks.
