Trump renews pledge to bring back US troops from Afghanistan to end US' longest war

US President Donald Trump reiterated his wish to completely pull out the US troops stationed in Afghanistan, adding that he has not set a specific date for it.

US President Donald Trump reiterated his wish to completely pull out US troops stationed in Afghanistan, ding that he has t set a specific date for it. During a White House Press Conference on May 26, Trump said that US security forces have been re for 19 years and have been acting as police and t soldiers.

“We’re really t acting as soldiers; we’re acting as police.  And we’re t sent over re to be policemen.  But we’re re 19 years.  And, yeah, I think that’s eugh.  And y understand,” said Trump.

US President emphasised that government is having “very positive” talks with stakeholders, ding that y want to bring soldiers back home t only from Afghanistan but from or countries as well. However, when Trump was asked wher Thanksgiving holiday on vember 26 was a target date for full withdrawal, he said that he has target.

“. I have target. But as soon as reasonable. Over a period of time but as soon as reasonable,” ded Trump.

Temporary ceasefire

Taliban recently called for a temporary suspension of “offensive operations” solely for Eid festivities and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani reciprocated by ordering security forces to comply with 3-days truce. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hoped that temporary ceasefire will also allow Taliban and government opportunity to take ditional steps toward a peaceful future for ir country.

“ United States remains committed to implementation of US-Taliban agreement and US-Afghanistan Joint Declaration,” Pompeo said in a statement.

top US diplomat stated that he expects Dr Abdullah Abdullah and President Ghani to use opportunity to remove remaining obstacles that have delayed peace talks, starting with release of prisoners. He also called on Taliban to here to ir commitment t to allow released prisoners to return to battlefield.
