US: 2 killed, 1 injured in Chicago expressway crash

Two people were killed and another was seriously injured when an SUV crashed along a Chicago expressway, halting traffic for hours on the city's South Side, police said.Illinois State Police said the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control and the vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier about 11 p.m. Tuesday, flipped and became pinned against a pole.

Firefighters extricated the driver and passengers, who were trapped inside the crushed vehicle, police said.Two people were taken to a hospital before being pronounced dead, while a third was being treated for serious injuries, police said.Traffic came to a stand-still as emergency crews worked at the scene, diverting vehicles around the crash scene. State police closed all lanes of the expressway but reopened them about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. The crash remains under investigation, police said.
