US accuses Iran of using satellite launch as cover for ballistic missile development

The United States has accused Iran of developing ballistic missile technology in the garb of a satellite launch. Iran had two failed satellite launches in 2019.

United States has accused Iran of developing ballistic missile techlogy in garb of a satellite launch. An Iranian minister on February 3 said that country will launch a satellite into orbit by end of this week following which Washington said that it is a cover for ballistic missile development. According to reports, Iran h two failed satellite launches last year and is w preparing for a third launch.

United States fears that long-range ballistic missile techlogy could be used to launch nuclear warhes as it is same techlogy used to put satellites into orbit. Trump ministration in 2018 withdrew from nuclear deal between Iran and P5+1 (UN Security Council members) toger with European Union. nuclear deal, also kwn as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in 2015 during Obama ministration. Washington re-imposed sanctions on Iran following withdrawal from deal.

US-Iran tensions

Tensions between United States and Tehran are at an all-time high after General Qassem Soleimani, he of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed by US air raid near Baghd's international airport on January 3, along with six ors. Iran in response bombed Ain al-As airbase in Iraq that houses US and coalition forces. According to reports, US airbase was struck by multiple rockets during wee hours of January 8. This incident was first reported by Iranian state TV, who described it as Tehran’s revenge operation over killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
