US, ASEAN Committed To Resolve Territorial Claims On South China Sea

The United States and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have a consensus to address the territorial disputes on the South China Sea, US Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan said on Thursday, September 27, 2018

 United States and Association of Souast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have a consensus to dress territorial disputes on South China Sea, US Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan said on Thursday, September 27, 2018. 

Speaking to reporters following ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on sidelines of 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Sullivan said;

"I have met with a number of - bilaterally with a number of ASEAN countries during my week here at UNGA. I would say that re is consensus, a commitment by ASEAN and  United States to rule of law, Law of Sea treaty, that should govern se claims, disputed claims to South China Sea, and t unilateral actions by one country to develop features in  South China Sea and, even worse, to militarise m."

"I think re was unanimity among members in room that re are, everyone ackwledges disputed claims in  South China Sea. What every one of those member-countries and  United States is looking for is resolution of those claims t unilaterally by one country but under rms of international law," he ded.

Sullivan furr said that Washington wishes for a peaceful resolution of all disputes in region.

"During our meeting, I highlighted US commitment to upholding international law, including freedom of navigation in  South China Sea. And our opposition to what  Chinese Government has done in  South China Sea is t because we think we are making a determination that China does or does t have a claim to a particular feature of South China Sea.'' he said 

''We want international law to be followed and for re to be a peaceful process, t a unilateral decision by one country, to resolve those claims, which involve a number of different countries - Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia," he ded

South China Sea is one of most contested regions in  world. China, Philippines, and Vietnam, among several ors, have overlapping territorial claims on sea.
