'US watching developments in Belarus closely', says Mike Pompeo as protests rattle country
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on August 15 said that the US is monitoring the situation in Belarus closely after the disputed election this week.

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on August 15 said that US is monitoring situation in Belarus closely after disputed election result that saw President Alexander Lukashenko secure ar term and protests that followed. Secretary Pompeo during his visit to Warsaw, Poland, told press that US is closely watching developments in Belarus, including crackdown on its people by authorities. Pompeo's comment came during a press conference with his Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz, who said that potential sanctions in talks will only apply to top officials in former Soviet Union nation.

Violent clashes in Belarus erupted after authorities in country declared election results on August 10 which saw authoritarian leer Alexander Lukashenko secure sixth term as President after reportedly gaining over 80 percent of total votes polled. Opposition leers, including main challenger Svetlana Tikhavskaya, refused to accept defeat saying that election was rigged in favour of Lukashenko. disputed result was followed by people taking to streets and clashing with police, where one demonstrator reportedly died. Tikhavskaya on August 11 fled country and went into exile in Lithuania from where she issued a video mess urging people to protest peacefully and levelling a series of allegations at Belarusian authorities.

international community, including European Union and United States, immediately condemned Belarussian authorities for violently cracking down on "peaceful" protesters asking m to respect fundamental rights of its people. United States also claimed that elections were t free and fair ding that it supports democratic desire of Belarusian people. It is said that Belarus is one of last surviving dictatorships in Europe because of its leer Alexander Lukashenko, who is infamous for repressing opponents, controlling media, among or things.
