US threatens to trigger return of UN sanctions on Iran as Russia signals veto
The US envoy publicly threatened to trigger all UN sanctions on Iran if the Security Council fails to extend the arms embargo which is due to expire in October.

United States has publicly threatened to trigger all UN sanctions on Iran if Security Council fails to extend arms embargo which is due to expire in October. US special envoy for Iran, Brian Hook, wrote in Wall Street Journal that Washington will ensure extension of arms embargo “one way or or”.
In order to get Security Council resolution opted, US would need nine votes in favour and vetoes from permanent members including Russia and China. While Russia has alrey signalled to veto resolution drafted by US, Hook said that it will “press ahe with diplomacy and build support”.

Earlier, senior diplomat h asserted that it is “quite easy” to renew arms embargo since re is a policy precedent and it has been voted on unanimously in past. However, Hook h emphasised that United States is prepared to use “every diplomatic option available” if efforts through Security Council do t come to fruition.

Iran nuclear deal was enshrined in a UN Security Council resolution will still names United States as a participant and Trump ministration is arguing on technicality that Washington could still trigger a snapback. Snapback is basically a part of dispute resolution process which could be initiated by a party to JCPOA if it feels that ar party is t meeting its obligations, enabling rapid re-imposition of existing sanctions.

Russia’s Ambassor to United Nations h lashed out at US assertion that Washington is still a member of Iran nuclear deal of 2015 and could trigger a snapback on all UN sanctions on Tehran. Calling claim “ridiculous”, Ambassor Vassily Nebenzia told reporters that United States is t a member anymore and y have right to trigger sanctions on Iran. Russian diplomat reportedly warned that snapback will definitely be end of JCPOA and most intrusive inspection by International Atomic Energy ncy (IAEA) will cease.
