US, UNSC members struggle over 'snapback' as Iran's arms embargo deadline nears

On September 18, UK, France, and Germany dispatched a letter to United Nations Security Council (UNSC), saying, that it needs United Nations sanctions relief for Iran amid US President’s threats of “severe consequences” against world firms conducting operations. United Staes is set to reimpose a tre embargo on Iran as deline looms. In May 2019, US pulled out of Iranian nuclear deal, Joint Co-operative Plan of Action (JCPOA). Trump said in press that deal was “a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been me”. Later, US imposed “ highest level” of ecomic sanctions against Islamic Republic.
In letter, cited by sources of local European news ncies, UNSC members stated that Iran sanctions would be "incapable of legal effect” and nations have me efforts to preserve nuclear agreement and remain committed to doing so. At least 13 countries on 15-member UN Security Council, including UK, France, and Germany argued US move as “void”. Furrmore, US has invited to exercise legal right to slap sanctions on Iran using ” snapback” and Trump is reported to issue an executive order for imposing US sanctions, according to US ncy reports.

Furr, according to an Atlantic Council’s report, United States’ proposed extension of arms embargo against Iran was only supported by Dominican Republic while rest of nations isolated US with abstentions against its proposition. For months, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook have been making attempts to get arms sanctions to vote passed in assembly, however, US pressure campaign has been hinting towards a failed strategy with US Department of State’s dismantled relations with its European allies.

E3’s have maintained support for JCPOA and have led a potion to pressurize US to return to nuclear agreement with Iran. However, US started process of activating sanctions mechanism on Iran in August, which is expected to prohibit conventional Iran’s arms embargo from expiring on October 18.
