US Vice President Kamala Harris to visit Indonesia to attend US-ASEAN & East Asia Summits

US Vice President Kamala Harris will be going to Jakarta, Indonesia from September 4-7 to take part in the US-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit.

US Vice President Kamala Harris will be going to Jakarta, Indonesia from September 4-7 to take part in the US-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit. During the meetings, she would interact with the leaders from the Indo-Pacific, informed White House press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday, August 22.

The ASEAN leaders and Kamala Harris would be working together on the unprecedented expansion of US-ASEAN relations under the Biden-Harris administration. The US Vice President would assure the United States of an ongoing commitment to Southeast Asia and ASEAN centrality. Notably, ASEAN has barred Myanmar’s junta leaders from the bloc’s high-level meetings, reported AP

Kamala at ASEAN, Biden at G20 

Kamala Harris would be visiting the Southeast Asian region for the third time in a span of two years. Her visit will ensure that US and ASEAN would continue to work together on the climate crisis, infrastructure, maritime security, economic growth, efforts to uphold and strengthen international rules and norms in the region, and other regional and global challenges. Earlier, she had made a visit to Singapore and Vietnam in August 2021 and Thailand and the Philippines in November 2022.

Meanwhile, the White House has shared the upcoming visit of  US President Joe Biden who will be attending a G-20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi from September 7 to September 10.

During the G-20 Summit, Biden and other G-20 members will talk about the clean energy transition and combating climate change increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks. 

 “President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will travel to New Delhi, India, from September 7-10 to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit,” read the press statement released by the White House. “President Biden and G20 partners will discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, including the clean energy transition and combatting climate change, mitigating the economic and social impacts of Putin’s war in Ukraine, and increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank, to better fight poverty, including by addressing global challenges," it added.
