Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro on Sunday said he was ready for "dialogue, cooperation and understanding"  with US President-elect Joe Biden's incoming administration.

Maduro said US President Donald Trump was leaving behind a "minefield" in the relationship between Washington and Caracas.

Under Trump, the US has imposed crippling sanctions on Venezuela aimed at forcing Maduro out of office.

"We will work, hopefully, to resume decent, sincere, direct channels of dialogue between the future government of Biden and the legitimate and constitutional government of Venezuela, which I preside over," Maduro said.

Democrat Biden defeated Trump to become the 46th president of the United States on Saturday.
