Water scarcity to hit several parts of Asia, water plants to suffer

According to a new study published in ‘Energy and environment science’, parts of Asia may significantly be affected due to climate change and over-tapped waterways. This is because water to cool down power plants is w scarce. study also suggested that problem is going to be on a much larger scale in Asia, especially in regions of India and China and Souast Asia, where more than 400 gigawatts of new coal-fired power plant capacity are planned for operation by 2030.
Power plants require cooling by water
"One of impacts of climate change is that wear is changing, which les to more extreme events -- more torrential downpours and more droughts," said Jeffrey Bielicki, a co-author of study and an associate professor with a joint appointment in Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering and John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University.

" power plants -- coal, nuclear and natural gas power plants -- require water for cooling, so when you don't have rain, you don't have streamflow, you can't cool power plant," ded Bielicki. According to Bielicki, power plants in United States are alrey facing this problem. water supply in such regions has been reduced due to where extreme wear patterns.

Part of problem comes from plant itself
A part of problem is going to come from increasing power production of plant, which, in turn, will only create a much higher demand for water. "Capacity expansion and climate change combined is going to reduce water available to cool power plants," said Yaoping Wang, le author of study and a former doctoral student at Ohio State. Wang, w a research assistant professor at University of Tennessee, has also previously researched during his fellowship at International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria.
