New Delhi: Israel’s Defence Ministry announced this week a $500 million deal to begin the production of Iron Beam, a laser interception system designed to target and destroy incoming rockets, missiles, and drones. This innovative system will be developed by Rafael Advanced Defence Systems and Elbit Systems and is expected to be operational within a year.

Iron Beam will enhance Israel’s existing multilayered aerial defence systems, which already include the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Arrow systems. These current technologies are designed to intercept various threats, but the Iron Beam is expected to revolutionize missile defence due to its cost-effectiveness and operational capabilities. The ministry noted that Iron Beam will complement the Iron Dome, strengthening defences against rockets, missiles, UAVs, and cruise missiles.

The Iron Beam is unique in that it employs high-power lasers to down incoming projectiles with unprecedented precision. The system can engage targets at the speed of light over distances ranging from hundreds of meters to several kilometers, featuring an unlimited ammunition supply and near-zero cost per interception. This capability will help address the challenge posed by drones, which have become increasingly difficult to intercept.

In response to the ongoing conflict with Iran-backed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, the introduction of Iron Beam signifies a new era in Israel's defence strategy. The system is intended to engage smaller projectiles, while larger threats such as ballistic missiles will continue to be addressed by the Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors.

In addition to the initial investment, Israel's defence ministry has also earmarked an additional $530 million to accelerate the development of Iron Beam, with specific contracts awarded to Elbit Systems for its production. This funding comes amidst heightened tensions and military engagements with Hamas and Hezbollah, underscoring the urgent need for effective defence solutions.

As Israel continues to navigate its complex security landscape, the Iron Beam is poised to play a crucial role in its defence strategy, enhancing its ability to protect against a range of aerial threats at a fraction of the cost of traditional interception methods.
