Amid looming Coronavirus crisis, WHO announces new Ebola vaccine

Amid concerns about the novel Coronavirus that is wreaking havoc in China, WHO has announced a new injectable Ebola vaccine that's reported to be 98% effective

Amid concerns about vel Coronavirus that is wreaking havoc in China, WHO has anunced a new injectable Ebola vaccine.  Ebola outbreak in West Africa between 2012 and 2016 was largest on record since virus' discovery back in 1976. Since outbreak, more than 28,600 cases and nearly 11,300 deaths were reported in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

WHO prequalifies Ebola vaccine

According to recent reports, a study has found new injectable Ebola vaccine called 'Ervebo' to be 98% effective. According to WHO, vaccine can also greatly reduce chances of death in those alrey affected by disease. Reportedly, vaccine has alrey been proven to be effective in protecting people from Ebola Zaire virus.

vaccine has been recommended by WHO Strategic visory Group of Experts. This new vaccine is a part of a broer set of tools used to combat Ebola. According to reports, vaccine would t require 'clinical or or research protocols' and in coming weeks, vaccine will be registered in various African nations.

vaccine is created by a company called Merck, kwn as MSD outside of US and Cana. WHO Director-General Tedros ham Ghebreyesus in a statement asked world to once again commit to reaching zero Ebola cases. As per reports, prequalification process for Ervebo has been fastest so far because vaccine was urgently needed. Pre-qualification means that vaccine meets WHO's standards for quality, safety, and efficacy.

According to WHO, conducting research on a dely virus and attempting to contain it in an area of high security has been a real challenge. Reports indicate that medical teams have h to travel with an armed escort in areas such as rast Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). rth Kivu province is amongst DRC's most populated regions, with a population of eight million people. According to reports, thousands in region have been displaced due to fighting among armed groups. This has resulted in people attempting to flee country into neighbouring countries, which poses an ditional health risk.
