WHO gave enough time to respond before declaring COVID-19 emergency: Dr Tedros
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on May 1 gave a robust defence of WHOs’s “timely" action on the COVID-19 pandemic saying that it had given enough time.

WHO chief Tedros ham Ghebreyesus on May 1 gave a robust defence of WHOs’s “timely" action on COVID-19 pandemic and said that it h declared it an international health emergency at end of January. Recently, WHO h also released a comprehensive timeline of organisation’s response to pandemic. He also expressed "grave concerns about potential impact" of disease if it spre to countries with "weaker health systems".

Speaking at a virtual news briefing, WHO chief said, " January 30 declaration was me in eugh time for rest of world to respond because at that st, re were only 82 cases of infection and deaths outside China." He ded that WHO h used days before declaring it as a global health emergency to as time to visit China to learn more about virus and also to make a “groundbreaking deal" with China to send in investigators.
WHO faces criticism
US h accused WHO is mishandling pandemic and conspiring with China to conceal information. When asked about US-WHO relations, Tedros reportedly clarified that both were in "constant contact" and were working toger. WHO, in recent times, has been threatened by "worrying spre" of COVID-19 in Haiti, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, and rn Nigeria. On or hand, many countries are w moving towards easing lockdowns. Speaking about reduced restrictions, Mark Ryan, WHO ‘s he of emergencies reportedly said that it was important for those nations to “constantly look for a jump in infection” and be proper to reimpose stringent measures.
