Wuhan: Director of hospital dies after contracting coronavirus

The head of a Wuhan hospital, Dr Liu Zhiming has died on February 17 after contracting the deadly coronavirus or Covid-19 which has now claimed 1,886 lives.

According to international reports, Zhiming was director of Wuchang Hospital in city which is believed to be epicentre of coronavirus which has w claimed 1,886 lives with 72,436 confirmed cases in China. Chinese media has confirmed Zhiming's death, who is also reportedly first hospital director to have died from coronavirus.

According to Chinese brocaster, Wuhan hospital director h died after “all-out rescue efforts failed”. Even though Zhiming is first kwn director to have died of coronavirus, according to media reports, six or medical workers have also died. However, recent death has furr sparked a national outpouring of grief with people calling it a “sacrifice” along with anger against authorities who are being accused of mishandling crisis. Many condolences were also shared on Chinese social media platform, Webo, where state media h also first reported news. 

WHO to supply medical equipment

Ar doctor h earlier died in January after contracting vel virus while working at a hospital in Wuhan. World Health Organisation has said in a statement that it will still t consider coronavirus as a 'pandemic' and is currently focussing on protecting health workers around world. WHO also said that it is sending protective equipment to several countries and working toger with manufacturers in order to ensure supply.

Earlier this month, WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros ham Ghebreyesus h said that world is currently facing a 'chronic short' of personal protective equipment. He furr said that organisation was sending testing kits, masks, gloves, respirators and or essentials to several countries. WHO director-general also spoke to Pandemic Supply Chain Network in order to find solutions and fair distribution of equipment.

Ghebreyesus has also briefed on Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan which estimates that world currently needs $675 million for next three months to invest in containing spre of coronavirus. So far, WHO has pledged for $110 million and several dors have alrey shown interest. Ghebreyesus also said that UN system is being mobilized by 'full power' in order to respond to 2019-nCoV emergency.
