Installing GPS tracker: A GPS tracker is a device that is used to locate the location of any person, object, or vehicle. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and works on receiving signals from a network of satellites that are orbiting around the Earth. A GPS Tracker comes in different types and is used for various purposes. It can be used for personal safety, tracking the location of taxis by a fleet operator, or for asset recovery. Installing a GPS tracker is a simple task.

Different varieties of GPS trackers are available in the market. There are plug-and-play GPS trackers, Hardwired GPS trackers, battery-powered GPS trackers, and active and passive GPS trackers available for vehicles. Mostly, vehicle owners use a plug-and-play GPS tracker or a hardwired GPS tracker in their vehicles.

Step-1 Choosing the right GPS tracker for your vehicle:

Plug-and-Play GPS tracker: These GPS trackers get connected directly to the OBD-II port of the vehicle and do not require any external wiring.

Hardwired GPS tracker: These types of GPS trackers require more effort and they are connected to the vehicle’s electrical system.

Step-2 Tools Required:

If going for a hardwired GPS tracker, then the following tools are required, a screwdriver, electrical tape, wire strippers, and zip ties for mounting.

Step-3 For installing Plug-and-Play GPS Trackers:

Locate the OBD-II port of the vehicle. This is generally present under the steering wheel or the dashboard. Connect the tracker to the port and secure it for stability.

Step-4 For installing Hardwired GPS Tracker:

Locate the vehicle’s ignition wires, these are usually found under the steering wheel.

Connect the red wire of the GPS tracker to the constant power source.

Connect the black wire of the GPS tracker to the grounding point.

Connect the white wire to the ignition switch wire. This turns on the tracker when the vehicle is switched on.

Secure the connections of the tracker using the electrical tape and prevent any short circuit damage.

Step-5 Mounting the tracker:

Both types of trackers should be mounted at a location, that is out of sight and allows for good reception of GPS signals. There are common spots such as below the dashboard, underneath the seats, or near the bumpers.

Step-6 Testing of the installation:

Testing of the GPS tracker is an important part. Turn on the vehicle and check if the GPS tracker powers. Check for signals by driving the vehicle under the open sky and ensuring that it is receiving GPS signals. Use the smartphone to access the tracking software, and check for the location.

Step-7 Final checks for wires:

In the last step, ensure that all the connections are made tight and secure and there are no loose connections.
