Bengaluru-Based Home-Startup To Provide Artificial Limbs To Over 500 Yemeni War Victims

Bengaluru-based home-startup KARE Prosthetics & Orthotics has secured an order to provide artificial limbs to over 500 patients from Yemen, who have been left impaired in war. A MoU to this effect has been signed between KARE CEO Mr Saravanan Sundarakrishnan and Mr Hamood from Yemen on October 22, 2018. 

The patients are already in Bangalore, under a 3-month medical visa and their treatment process has been initiated. In the first phase of the project, a total of 130 patients have arrived in India to avail the treatment. They are victims of war with different levels of amputations and are aged between 18 to 35 years. Following their return, the second lot of war victims will be sent to India.

The organization stated that the patients will be fitted with upper and lower limb prosthesis at KARE’s 7,000 square feet state-of-the-art prosthetic and orthotic clinic in Bangalore. Later, they will be trained to walk, run, and continue with their regular activities. Explaining the positive effects of the treatment, they said that using the artificial limbs one can do everything from cycling to walking on the ramp. 

Speaking to Republic TV, Saravanan Sundrakrishnan, the CEO of KARE Prosthetics & Orthotics said that the whole process for each individual will be complete in a period of 2 months which will include patient evaluation, casting, and training.

"We are a clinical service providing company where we give the freedom to patients for choosing the components based on cost, activity, ease of using and brands. We have teamed up with OSSUR, an Icelandic-based global company who will be helping us with the procurement of prosthetic components." Sundrakrishnan said.

Besides artificial limbs, KARE Prosthetics & Orthotics also provide adult and pediatric orthotics, diabetic shoes and inserts. The company is working in collaboration with OSSUR, an Iceland-based company which is a world leader in the manufacturing of prosthetic components. Explaining how they function, the CEO stated that they take base products from OSSUR and assemble them into prosthetic components at home. The hi-tech activity prosthesis is then provided to the patients at a subsidized rate.
