Twitter to let staff work from home permanently

Twitter's CEO Jack Dorsey told employees Tuesday that they can work from home permanently, even after the coronavirus pandemic ends.

Most Twitter employees at the company's San Francisco headquarters have been working from home for the last two months.

California has more than 70,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University but the number of infections is thought to be far higher because of a shortage of testing.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms for up to three weeks. The vast majority recover. Some older adults and people with existing health problems can experience severe illness including pneumonia and death.

Many technology companies embraced stay-at-home policies early on, saying most of their workers can do their jobs remotely.

Business trend analyst Silvina Moschini says companies can save money and help employee morale by allowing them to work from home if they choose.

She says it's a perk that could help attract top talent to companies which allow working from home and expects the trend to continue to grow in the tech industry.

Dan Khasis, Founder and CEO of the mapping-technology company Route4Me, has about 80 employees who all work remotely.

He says the money he's saved on office space has allowed him to offer higher salaries and give merit bonuses.

Other big tech companies like Facebook and Google have also been working remotely as they prepare move back to offices amid the pandemic.

Both are allowing employees to work from home until the end of 2020.
