Adani Total Gas unveils 'Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project' ahead of COP28 in UAE
Following the successful completion of the pilot, hydrogen-blended fuel will be incrementally supplied to larger areas of the city and other licensed region.
In anticipation of the upcoming COP28 in the UAE, Adani Total Gas, a key player in energy and city gas distribution co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, has announced the initiation of a 'Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project.'
The groundbreaking project aims to utilise cutting-edge technologies to blend green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas, catering to more than 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable sources. While hydrogen blending is less carbon-intensive than burning gas, it possesses similar heating capabilities.
Expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2024-25, the project plans to gradually increase the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend, reaching up to 8 per cent or more, contingent upon regulatory approvals.
Suresh P Manglani, Executive Director and CEO of Adani Total Gas, emphasised the company's commitment to building environmentally sustainable operations. "This project will reduce our carbon footprint, and by investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and driving progress in sustainable energy solutions," Manglani stated.
Following the successful completion of the pilot, the hydrogen-blended fuel will be incrementally supplied to larger areas of the city and other licensed regions.
India, with its ambitious goal to become energy independent by 2047, has been actively pursuing sustainable energy initiatives. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved by the central government in January, aims to position India as a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen technologies. The mission aligns with broader efforts to decarbonise industrial, transport, and energy sectors, reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
COP28, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, scheduled from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, provides a platform for global leaders to discuss and strategise on climate-related initiatives. India, committed to its "Panchamrit" pledge made at COP26 in 2021, aims to achieve significant milestones, including reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, lowering emissions intensity, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
