Google warns of account deletion, Here's what you need to know
Google stressed that inactive accounts are more susceptible to unauthorised access, potentially leading to malicious activities.
Google has issued a warning to users with inactive accounts, stating that accounts not accessed for over two years could face deletion under the company's revamped policy. The move is part of Google's ongoing efforts to address security concerns associated with abandoned accounts.
The policy, introduced in May, aims to mitigate potential compromises of dormant accounts, often characterised by outdated passwords, lack of two-factor authentication, and reduced security checks.
Security concerns drive Google's policy update
Google stressed that inactive accounts are more susceptible to unauthorised access, potentially leading to malicious activities such as spam distribution, identity theft, and other security threats. Forgotten or unattended accounts tend to lack the security measures that actively used accounts employ, making them prime targets for exploitation.
Prevent deletion: Stay active or risk losing your content
To safeguard your account from deletion, it is crucial to sign in at least once every two years. Activities such as checking emails, using Google search, and watching YouTube videos (if signed in) contribute to maintaining account activity. Subscriptions linked to your Google account, including those for third-party apps and publications, also count towards fulfilling activity requirements.
Exceptions to the rule
While personal Google accounts inactive for two years or more are subject to deletion, there are exceptions. Accounts created for organizations, such as schools or companies, will not be affected by this policy. Additionally, Google has clarified that accounts managing active minor accounts, those with a gift card balance, and accounts used for ongoing purchases of Google products, apps, or subscriptions are exempt from the deletion process.
Preserving Google photos content and managing data
Google has alerted users that inactive Google Photos content may also face deletion after two years, emphasising the importance of periodic sign-ins to prevent data loss. For users concerned about preserving their data, Google provides tools such as Google Takeout, enabling the download and export of account data. The Inactive Account Manager feature allows users to decide the fate of their account and data in case of prolonged inactivity.
Take Control: Manage recovery email and communication preferences
Beyond staying active, Google encourages users to manage their recovery email settings. Providing and updating a recovery email ensures that users receive critical communications, including inactive account notices. Google's commitment to security extends to collaborating with immediate family members to close the account of a deceased loved one, providing account content without sharing login credentials on a case-by-case basis.
As the deletion process looms, users are urged to take proactive measures to secure their accounts and preserve valuable data stored on Google's platforms.
