New Delhi: As India enters its 78th year of independence from British rule, the nation is all set to commemorate August 15 as Independence Day. A significant part of this year's celebrations is the "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign. Citizens across the country will proudly display the Indian National Flag in their homes. However, it is crucial to ensure that the flags are respectfully taken down after the celebrations come to an end and preserved in accordance with the Flag Code of India.

The Flag Code of India, 2002, along with other laws and regulations, governs the use and handling of the National Flag. Many people may not be fully aware of these guidelines, which are essential to maintaining the dignity and respect of the Tricolour. The use of the National Flag is also regulated by the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act of 1950 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971. Violating these regulations can result in a fine or even a jail term of up to three years under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

The National Flag holds immense significance, and it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure it is treated with the utmost respect. Many people purchase paper flags for patriotic occasions, but it is important to remember that the Flag Code of 2002 mandates that the National Flag must never be thrown on the ground. Proper storage of the flag is also vital, and the following steps should be followed to ensure it is preserved correctly:

Steps to Properly Store the National Flag

1. Remove the Flag: Begin by carefully removing the flag from its placement.
2. Position the Flag Horizontally: Lay the flag flat in a horizontal position.
3. Fold the Saffron and Green Bands: Fold the saffron and green bands under the white band so that these colors remain visible.
4. Visible Ashoka Chakra: The flag should be folded in such a way that only the Ashoka Chakra and a portion of the saffron and green bands are visible after the white band is folded from both sides to the center.
5. Store with Care: Once folded, the flag can be carried and stored in the hands or arms, ensuring it is kept safe and respected.
