Under a strategic move to bolster security along the India-Bangladesh border, the Border Security Force (BSF) is gearing up to deploy a marine battalion, drones, and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the Sundarbans mangrove region. The plan, meticulously crafted by the Eastern Command of the BSF based in Kolkata, is designed to counter smuggling and infiltration activities in the sprawling mangrove forest, considered the world's largest. The Sundarbans, an archipelago of over 100 islands, forms a complex network of streams, rivers, tidal creeks, and channels spanning 9,630 sq km in India, with the rest falling within Bangladesh. Positioned at the delta of the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers in the Bay of Bengal, it holds immense strategic importance. The region is prone to cross-border infiltration, prompting the BSF to devise a robust plan to ensure effective control and security. BSF's blueprint: Marine Battalion, drones, and ATVs The blueprint of the plan includes the deployment of a marine battalion comprising over 1,100 trained personnel, a squadron of approximately 40 large drones, and 12-14 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). These resources are strategically chosen to address the challenges posed by the unique topography of the Sundarbans, combining dense forests and intricate waterways. The proposal is currently pending final approval and financial sanction from the Union Home Ministry in Delhi.Credit- BSFA senior BSF officer emphasized the urgency of securing the Sundarbans, citing inputs suggesting the potential use of this challenging forest and riverine area for cross-border infiltration by terrorists and criminals. The decision to raise an exclusive marine battalion, deploy long-range surveillance drones, and utilize ATVs is driven by the need for effective domination and security in this crucial border region. Operational details: Marine Battalion strength and surveillance capabilities The new marine battalion, once approved, will consist of more than 1,100 trained personnel, ensuring a specialized force for the Sundarbans. The deployment of 40 large drones equipped for long-haul surveillance and 12-14 ATVs will enhance patrolling capabilities in the challenging terrain. The BSF aims to set this plan into motion upon receiving the green light from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Presently, the BSF conducts patrols in the Sundarbans using a fleet of approximately 50 small and large speedboats, referred to as floating border outposts (BoPs). To further fortify their presence, the BSF has communicated its plan to the West Bengal government, seeking approval to station patrol teams in Forest Department 'chowkis' within the Sundarbans jurisdiction. This collaborative effort aims to optimize patrolling effectiveness and bolster security in the region. The BSF is tasked with guarding the entire 4,096 km stretch of the India-Bangladesh border, of which 2,216.7 km is located in West Bengal. Within this expanse, 300 km constitutes the riverine border in the Sundarbans. The force's proactive approach, coupled with technological advancements and strategic deployment, reflects a comprehensive strategy to address the multifaceted challenges posed by this unique border region.
