In 2005, he joined the Indian Air Force, beginning a 12-year journey that would see him serve in various bases across India. His exceptional service record and commitment led him to the elite Garud Commando Force, a specially trained unit tasked with protecting Air Force bases, conducting rescue operations, and handling high-risk situations in hostile environments. The Making of a Commando: Training and Selection The Garud Commando Force, formed in 2004, is named after the Hindu God Garud, symbolizing strength, courage, and resilience. This unit is known for its rigorous selection and training process, demanding both physical and mental fortitude. The Garud Commandos play a crucial role in airbase security, special reconnaissance, and rescuing downed pilots in dangerous territories. The force’s unique structure ensures that its personnel remain committed to their specialized roles throughout their career, regardless of their posting within the IAF.The selection process for the Garud Commandos is highly competitive, with candidates recruited directly through airmen selection centres. Aspiring candidates must undergo strenuous physical training, mental resilience exercises, and specialized skills development. The training is designed to prepare them for the challenges of commando operations, including combat in remote and hostile areas. Corporal Nirala’s determination to join the elite ranks of the Garud Commandos exemplified his commitment to serving the nation. After successfully completing the gruelling training, he was absorbed into the force, where he displayed exceptional leadership, courage, and skill. The Bandipora Operation: November 18, 2017 Corporal Nirala’s most defining moment came during a joint operation between the Garud Force and the 13th Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, on November 18, 2017. Intelligence sources had indicated the presence of terrorists in Chanderger village, and the security forces decided to launch a mission to neutralize the threat. Corporal Nirala’s detachment approached the designated area with utmost stealth, setting up a close-quarter ambush around the terrorists’ suspected hideout. Armed with a light machine gun, Nirala took up a position that strategically cut off all escape routes for the terrorists. As expected, the terrorists attempted to flee, triggering a violent confrontation. Amidst the chaos, the terrorists threw grenades and fired in an effort to escape. However, Nirala’s unparalleled courage shone through. Despite facing heavy gunfire, he engaged the militants, eliminating two category ‘A’ terrorists and injuring two others. His relentless fighting spirit continued even after he was critically injured by a volley of small arms fire. Tragically, Nirala succumbed to his injuries, but not before ensuring the elimination of all six ilitants involved in the operation. One of the militants killed during the encounter was later identified as the nephew of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the key planner of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. This made the operation not just a tactical success, but a significant blow to terrorism in the region. Honoring a Hero: Ashoka ChakraFor his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and sacrifice during the Bandipora operation, Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on January 26, 2018. Corporal Nirala is survived by his wife, Sushma Nand, his daughter, Jigyasa Kumari, and his mother, Malti Devi.
