In the annals of valour, Major Somnath Sharma's indomitable spirit shines as a beacon, defying adversity to protect his nation. Major Somnath Sharma's journey in the Indian military history began in 1923 in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Born into a family steeped in military tradition, his father, Major General Amarnath Sharma, and his brothers, Lt Gen Surinder Nath Sharma and General Vishwa Nath Sharma, proudly served in the Army. His sister, Major Kamla Tewari, was a medical doctor, reflecting the family's deep commitment to service.

Maj Somnath Sharma's military journey commenced on February 22, 1942, when he was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment. During World War II, he fought alongside Colonel KS Thimmayya, proving his mettle in the challenging terrain of Arakan. His act of heroism, carrying an injured soldier named "Bahadur" to safety amidst enemy gunfire, earned him a 'Mention in Dispatch' commendation. However, it was his actions during the 1947 Indo-Pak war which would earn him India’s highest war-time gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra. Coincidentally, the mother-in-law of Major Somnath Sharma’s brother, Savitri Khanolkar was the designer of the Param Vir Chakra.

The Battle of Badgam

In November 1947, Maj Somnath Sharma was assigned a mission that would forever etch his name in history: securing Badgam village. Despite having his left hand in a plaster cast due to a hockey injury, he insisted on leading his company into combat. Badgam held strategic significance as it lay on a route used by Pakistani raiders marching toward Srinagar.

Major Sharma's company faced overwhelming odds as 500 raiders from Gulmarg surrounded the village. They came under relentless enemy fire and mortar bombardment, suffering heavy casualties. Despite the dire situation, Major Sharma's unwavering leadership and undying spirit inspired his men to fight with unprecedented courage.

The Last Stand: A fight till glory

His selfless devotion to duty was evident as he tirelessly filled magazines and distributed them to soldiers manning light machine guns. He moved from post to post, motivating his troops without fearing for his own life. Tragically, during the battle, a mortar shell exploded near him, resulting in his martyrdom. In his final communication with Brigade HQ, his words epitomised his unwavering commitment, “The enemies are only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to our last man and our last round.”
