INS Imphal crest unveiling event poised to celebrate India's naval advancements
The crest of INS Imphal, the advanced P-15B stealth destroyer, will be unveiled on November 28, 2023, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries.
The majestic crest of Yard 12706 (Imphal), the third gem among the formidable Project 15B guided missile stealth destroyers crafted at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), is set to be unveiled on November 28, 2023, in a grand ceremony in New Delhi.
The vessel, christened Imphal during its launch in April 2019, was officially handed over to the Indian Navy by MDL on October 20, 2023. In a testament to its prowess, Imphal recently conducted successful trials, including the firing of an Extended Range BrahMos missile, showcasing its operational excellence.
Design evolution: Incremental changes for maximum impact
Part of the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, also known as the P-15B or P-15 Bravo class, INS Imphal stands as a beacon of advanced naval capabilities. This class, an upgrade from the Kolkata class, boasts enhanced features in stealth, automation, and ordnance, making it a formidable asset for the Indian Navy.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau, the P-15B project aimed for a destroyer comparable to the Kolkata class but with incremental changes to reduce development time and costs. The P-15B differentiates itself from its predecessor in several key aspects.
The vessel's bridge layout is optimized for reduced radar cross-section, highlighting its commitment to stealth technology. A unique "rail-less" helicopter traversing system enhances helicopter security during adverse weather, a feature absent in the P-15A. Notably, the P-15B relocates its sonar equipment to the bow, diverging from the P-15A's hull placement.
The P-15B integrates cutting-edge technology with a network-centric layout, featuring a Ship Data Network (SDN), Automatic Power Management System (APMS), and Combat Management System (CMS). These advancements position the destroyer at the forefront of naval innovation.
Imphal, named after the historic city, holds pride of place as the first capital warship named after a city in the North-Eastern region of India. With an impressive indigenous content of approximately 75%, including MR SAM, BrahMos SSM, Indigenous Torpedo Tube Launchers, Anti-Submarine Indigenous Rocket Launchers, and 76 mm SRGM, Imphal represents a pinnacle of indigenous shipbuilding.
Imphal sets a new record as the first indigenous destroyer to undergo swift construction and complete its sea trials, paving the way for its commissioning into the Indian Navy in December 2023. The Crest Unveiling Event, graced by the Raksha Mantri, Chief Minister of Manipur, and key defense officials, celebrates the technological marvel that is INS Imphal.
