India's elite counter-terrorism force, the National Security Guard (NSG), is celebrating its 39th Raising Day today, showcasing the force's commitment to safeguarding the nation. On this significant occasion, we delve into the remarkable journey of the NSG, their pivotal role in national security, the rigorous selection and training of their personnel, and some of their noteworthy operations.

Established on October 16, 1984, in response to a dire need for a specialized counter-terrorism unit, the NSG swiftly rose to prominence. Their primary mandate was to combat terrorism, handle hostage situations, and protect dignitaries. Over nearly four decades, the NSG has emerged as one of the world's premier counter-terrorism forces.

NSG personnel are meticulously selected from various branches of the armed forces and central police organizations. Candidates undergo a rigorous assessment process, including physical and mental evaluations. Those who qualify must complete extensive training, which covers marksmanship, explosives handling, close-quarters combat, and dealing with chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. The force ensures that its commandos are always at the cutting edge of counter-terrorism tactics and prepared to face any challenge.

The NSG has been at the forefront of several critical operations, demonstrating their unparalleled skill and bravery. Notably, they played a pivotal role during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, where they neutralized the terrorists and rescued hostages, earning admiration and gratitude from the nation. The force has been actively involved in anti-terrorist operations in insurgency-prone areas, consistently upholding the nation's security.

The 'Black Cats' and their distinctive role

NSG commandos, fondly known as 'Black Cats' due to their signature black uniforms, symbolize India's resilience in the face of terrorism. Their unwavering commitment to duty is matched by their physical and mental toughness, a product of their rigorous training. They are known for their precision in marksmanship and their proficiency in handling a wide array of weaponry.

The NSG is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, cutting-edge communication systems, and protective gear. They also possess specialized equipment for explosive ordnance disposal, a vital asset in their counter-terrorism operations. While their primary role is counterterrorism, the NSG has not hesitated to extend their expertise in humanitarian efforts. They have played a pivotal role in disaster response during natural calamities like earthquakes and floods. This dual role underscores their dedication to national service. Furthermore, the force is deployed in insurgency-hit areas, especially the Kashmir valley, where NSG commandos put boots on the ground for the first time recently during the G20 meeting in May.

As national security threats evolve, the NSG remains adaptable, now facing challenges like cyber-terrorism. The force is proactive in adapting to new threats, ensuring they are always at the forefront of national security. India's National Security Guard, with its proud legacy of 39 years, epitomizes excellence in national security. As they celebrate their Raising Day, the nation salutes these brave 'Black Cats' who stand as a bulwark against terrorism, ensuring the safety and security of the nation. Happy 39th Raising Day to the NSG!
