Harvard University Offers Free Tuition: Everything You Need to Know About Eligibility and How to Apply

Garber and Edgerley Family Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Hopi Hoekstra, recently announced that, starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, Harvard College will offer free tuition for students from families with annual incomes of $100,000 or less. Additionally, students from families earning up to $200,000 will also have their tuition fully covered.

Who is Eligible for Harvard's Free Tuition Financial Aid?

Free Tuition for Families Earning Less Than $100,000: Students whose families earn less than $100,000 annually will have all their costs covered, including tuition, food, housing, health insurance, and travel expenses.

Free Tuition for Families Earning Less Than $200,000: If a student's family makes $200,000 or less, they will have free tuition.

Financial Aid for Families Earning More: Even families that make more than $200,000 will still be eligible for financial aid.

1. Follow Standard Application Process: Prospective students must complete the regular application process to Harvard.

2. Submit Financial Documents: Students will need to submit financial documents as part of their application.

3. Meet Income Criteria: Students from families meeting the specified income thresholds will be considered for free tuition.

4. Eligibility for Free Tuition: Those who qualify based on income will receive free tuition starting in the 2025-2026 academic year.

5. Accessibility and Affordability: This initiative aims to make Harvard more affordable and accessible to a broader range of students.

Harvard says this new initiative will make the university more affordable, particularly for middle-income families. The financial aid plan also includes a two-part startup grant for graduates to help with their transition after leaving the university.

The cost for Harvard’s 2024-2025 academic year is expected to be $82,866 for undergraduate students. However, the expansion of this financial aid program will help many students who may have found the high costs out of reach.
