Situated near the ancient ruins of the renowned Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar, the inauguration saw PM Modi launch a plaque and ceremonially plant a sapling to mark the occasion. Prior to the ceremony, the Prime Minister visited the ancient Nalanda University ruins, reflecting on its rich legacy as a global center of learning during its zenith in the 5th century.
The new campus, built at a cost of Rs 1,749 crore, stands as a testament to India's commitment to revitalizing one of its most iconic institutions. It boasts two academic blocks with 40 classrooms capable of seating approximately 1,900 students, complemented by two auditoriums each seating 300 individuals, and a hostel accommodating up to 550 students. Additional facilities include an international center, an expansive amphitheater for 2,000 people, a faculty club, and a state-of-the-art sports complex.

Designed as a 'Net Zero' Green Campus, Nalanda University's new facility integrates eco-friendly architecture with ancient Vaastu principles. It is equipped with a 6.5-MW DC on-grid solar plant, domestic and drinking water treatment plants, a 400-KLD water recycling plant, and spans over 100 acres of water bodies. This sustainable infrastructure underscores India's commitment to environmental stewardship and self-sustaining practices.
Established in 2014 with a modest cohort of 14 students at a temporary site, the journey to the new campus began in 2017. The inauguration ceremony was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and heads of missions from 17 countries, including ASEAN nations, marking Nalanda University as a collaborative effort between India and East Asia Summit (EAS) countries.
Nalanda University, founded in the 5th century, was revered as a global hub of knowledge and learning until its decline in the 12th century due to invasions. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, its revival underlines India's cultural and educational aspirations on the global stage. The new campus not only honors its illustrious past but also aims to foster international collaboration in education and research, embodying a vision of intellectual excellence and cultural exchange for the future.
