Oxford University Press has unveiled its Word of the Year for 2023 after a rigorous selection process involving over 32,000 votes and a panel of language experts. The distinguished title for 2023 goes to "rizz," an internet slang term signifying one's allure or ability to captivate others through style, charm, or attractiveness.
According to Oxford's language specialists, the term "rizz" finds its origin in the middle segment of the word 'charisma,' encapsulating the essence of attracting others through personal appeal.
The usage of "rizz" has experienced a substantial surge in 2023, notably peaking in June. An interview featuring actor Tom Holland contributed significantly to this peak, where he was questioned about his 'rizz,' humorously responding with, "I have no rizz whatsoever, I have limited rizz."
Beyond its noun form, Oxford notes that "rizz" can also function as a verb, particularly in the phrase "rizz up," denoting the act of attracting, seducing, or engaging in conversation to captivate someone's interest.
The selection of "rizz" as the Word of the Year emerged from a shortlist of eight words, each chosen to reflect the prevailing mood, ethos, or preoccupations of 2023. After public voting narrowed down the list, Oxford's lexicographers finalized the decision, as reported by the BBC.
Last year's Oxford Word of the Year, "goblin mode," described unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, or greedy behavior, showcasing the dynamic nature of language and its evolution within contemporary culture.
In a parallel revelation, Collins Dictionary announced their Word of 2023 as "artificial intelligence," underscoring the growing influence and significance of technology in shaping our linguistic landscape
