In a big embarrassment to Congress party, Rahul Gandhi on Monday admitted in the Supreme Court that he made the statements made over the Rafale case in the “heat of political campaigning".

In the reply filed in the top court on the contempt plea filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, Rahul Gandhi said thar he "regrets" his comments in which he had said that "Supreme Court said Chowkidar ne chori ke hai (Supreme Court said that Chowkidar is involved in a theft)". 

Republic TV has accessed the relevant text of the affidavit filed by Rahul Gandhi in the Supreme Court in response to the Meenakshi Lekhi's contempt petition. 

In the affidavit, the Congress president, not once, but twice has admitted that he made the statement "in the heat of political campaigning", adding that he "regrets" his statements. 

"My statement was made in the heat of political campaigning. It has been used by my political opponents to project that I have deliberately and intentionally suggested that this court (Supreme Court) had said Chawkidaar Chor Hai. It is also clear that no court would ever do that and hence the unfortunate references (for which I express regret) to the court and to the political slogan in the juxtaposition the same breath in the heat of the political campaigning ought not be construed as suggesting that the court had given any finding or conclusion on that issue," the affidavit reads.

Rahul Gandhi on Monday replied to the contempt plea filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, in the Supreme Court on April 12, seeking contempt proceedings against the Congress president for attributing his remarks on the recent Rafale verdict to the apex court. The Supreme Court is set to hear the matter on April 23. 

Responding to Rahul Gandhi's admission, Meenakshi Lekhi stated that she is "satisfied" with his statement, "to the extent that she said he made a false statement".

The controversy broke when Rahul Gandhi said that "Supreme Court has accepted that 'Chokidar Chor Hai'", while addressing the press in Uttar Pradesh after filing his nomination papers in Amethi.

"Supreme Court ne nyay ke bare mai baat ke hai. Supreme Court said Chowkidar ne chori ke hai (Supreme Court will do justice. Supreme Court said that Chowkidar is involved in a theft)", Gandhi had.
