READ: Congress debacle in 2014 vs Congress disaster in 2019, seat by seat comparison of party's performance in Lok Sabha elections

The Congress Working Committee met following the party's drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections as it won 52 seats, winning just eight more seats since the 2014 polls. Congress president Rahul Gandhi's resignation was not accepted in the meeting, despite the party's poll debacle, as the 'party needed him'. 

The party under Gandhi's leadership not only lost the elections but failed to become a strong opposition to the BJP owing to it winning just 52 seats.  The voters did not seem to take well to Rahul Gandhi's digs at the Prime Minister, the constant mention of Rafale deal and allegations of corruption, the sloganeering of 'Chowkidar Chor Hai'. The party's manifesto promises, be it NYAY or the proposal to dilute AFSPA and action against sedition law, and zero concrete measures against corruption did not go down well with Indian electorate. 

While the party saw a colossal defeat in Karnataka, one state it also held on to following the assembly elections in a dysfunctional coalition with JD(S), it continued its hold over Kerala winning more seats since the previous general elections. It performed well in Punjab and Tamil Nadu compared to 2014.  While it maintained status quo in a few states, it lost its hold in several others.  The party has been wiped put from these states and Union Territories - Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.

Bangalore Rural - DK Suresh

In a massive defeat, the party won just one seat in the state. Its coalition with JD(S) failed to secure enough number of seats. Battle-hardened party giants such as Mallikarjun Kharge and Veerappa Moily were brought to their knees in this elections.

The party's plan to give the Tumkur seat, where it had a sitting MP, to JD(S) supremo HD Devegowda backfired as he lost the seat to a BJP candidate. Muddahanumegowda SP  had rebelled against the party decision of giving the seat to Devegowda and had even filed his nomination only to be pressurised to take it back.

Kerala

The party performed well in the state which usually sees a battle between Left led-LDF and Congress-led-UDF.
