National Conference chief Omar Abdullah who has had Twitter banters with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday took a dig at her after she referred to the term Chowkidar, which was used by PM Narendra Modi and BJP for Lok Sabha election campaigning.
As per media reports, Mehbooba Mufti during an election meeting with her party workers in Anantnag (from where she is contesting) in Jammu and Kashmir had said that she had done 'Chowkidari' for them. The report said that Mufti was disappointed about the low attendance of her own party workers in the meetings and said that she saved the people including the families of the militants from the terror of the army, task force and ‘Ikhwan raj’, adding that she "literally did ‘Chowkidari’" for their safety.
Abdullah took the opportunity to have a go at her using the report by calling her "Chowkidar Mehbooba Mufti" said that her choice of words did not suit the current political atmosphere.
Both Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been critical of the BJP's 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' campaign.
Mufti tweeted saying the campaign was an "irony" as Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choski, Nirav Modi all "fled under the Chowkidar's watch".
Abdullah on Wednesday said he never espoused Congress' "Chowkidar Chor Hai' but said that the Chowkidar had failed.
"We have never backed the slogan 'Chowkidar chor hai.' We have definitely said that Chowkidar has been unsuccessful. Chowkidar has failed," he said. "And one who keeps promising in rallies of doing Chowkidari, we have only seen his Chowkidari fail whether it is the attacks at Uri, Pathankot, Nagrota, Sunjwhan or Pulwama. Everywhere chowkidari has only failed," he said.
