Farhan Akhtar goofs up as he appeals to Bhopal to vote against Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, netizens ask, ‘Is this for 2024?’

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Bhopal Sadhvi Pragya Thakur has been among the most controversial names in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Apart from the flak for the ruling party for fielding an accused in the 2008 Malegaon Blasts case, a number of her statements also have attracted criticism. Thakur’s comments on 26/11 martyr Hemant Karkare and Nathuram Godse had created controversy long before her latest and most shocking remark - calling Mahatma Gandhi's assailant Nathuram Godse a 'deshbhakt' - something that has been condemned by the Prime Minister himself. Now, Farhan Akhtar also voiced his opinion against her and sent a message to the electorate of Bhopal to ‘save your city’. However, the actor-filmmaker appears to not be aware that the elections to the Madhya Pradesh constituency have been completed in the previous phase itself. Netizens pointed it out to him.

Farhan on Sunday tweeted, “Dear electorate of Bhopal, it’s time for you to save your city from another full-of-gas tragedy. #SayNoToPragya #SayNoToGodse #RememberTheMahatma #ChooseLoveNotHate.”

Netizens pointed it out to the ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ star, some asking if it was a tweet meant for 2024 and some even quipped that he should’ve checked the ‘instruction’ to vote against Thakur on WhatsApp on time. One even tagged the Election Commission to send the updates to the actor-director.

BJP's Bhopal candidate in a recent election rally called Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a 'patriot' and that those who call him a 'terrorist' should 'look within', in retaliation to actor-turned-politician Kamal Hasaan's 'Hindu terrorist' comment.  

She said, "Godse was a patriot, is a patriot and will remain a patriot. Those who call him a terrorist should look within they will get a reply in this election." 

BJP leaders faced the flak over Thakur's comment, being asked to cancel her candidature. However, the party distanced itself from the comment and party president Amit Shah said that her utterances were in 'personal capacity' 

Meanwhile, amid nation-wide uproar over the comment, in a final campaign interview to Republic Media Network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he won't "ever" be able to forgive Sadhvi Pragya for her comment.    

He said, "The remark is highly condemnable and unacceptable. People should not make such mistakes. People should not make such mistakes even by mistake. One must be aware. Yes, she may have apologised later, but I won't ever be able to forgive her." 

Even businessman Anand Mahindra wrote that Mahatma Gandhi's legacy is "sacred" to us and tweeted, “For 75 yrs, India’s been the land of the Mahatma; a beacon when the world lost its morality.We used to be pitied for being poor but we were always rich since Bapu inspired billions globally.Some things must remain sacred.Or we become the Taliban,destroying statues that sustain us.”
