Parliamentary debuts for the biggest names of the Samajwadi Party's first family have been witnessed from Kannauj - founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, his son Akhilesh Yadav, and also Dimple Yadav.
When Akhilesh Yadav had vacated the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat to take over as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in 2012, his wife Dimple Yadav contested the bypolls from the Samajwadi Party bastion. However, after Dimple’s defeat to Congress’s Raj Babbar in the 2009 bypolls in Firozabad, neither SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav or Akhilesh wanted to leave any stone unturned to ensure her victory, and that did, indeed, come to pass, and then again in 2014.
Akhilesh Yadav had made his political debut from Kannauj when he contested the 2000 by-poll, necessitated by Mulayam's resignation, and won by 58,000, bettering his victory margin in the next election. The seat has been with the SP since 1998 when Pradeep Kumar Yadav won it for the party for the first time.
Kannauj was also a seat of Ram Manohar Lohia (in 1967). Interestingly, former Delhi CM and current Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit became an MP from Kannauj in 1984.
