2019 Lok Sabha Election Results of Nizamabad, Telangana: Presumed underdog BJP's Arvind Dharmapuri stuns sitting MP K Kavitha in historic contest involving over 170 farmer candidates

Nizamabad- the constituency with the highest number of candidates (185) witnessed a high stakes battle between K Kavitha, daughter of Telangana CM K Chandrashekhara Rao and 178 farmers who had jumped into the fray to support their demand for a remunerative price for turmeric and red sorghum and for setting up of a Turmeric Board based in Nizamabad, aside from BJP's Arvind Dharmapuri and AICC Secretary Madhu Yashki Goud from the Congress. The battle was finally won by Arvind Dharmapuri who garnered 4,79,748 votes defeating the sitting MP who garnered 4,09,481 votes and Goud who only managed to get 69,173 votes, as of 9:30 PM.

Poll campaign issues:

The major hurdle faced by the by sitting MP K Kavitha was the agrarian crisis in the turmeric belt. While she had blamed the Centre for not taking the initiative to set up the Turmeric board, farmers had blamed the ruling TRS government for not fulfilling upon their poll promise on setting up the Turmeric board and ensuring minimum support price for turmeric and red sorghum produce.

The Chief Minister himself has rallied many times in this constituency to appease the farmers and to swing the agitation towards the Centre rather than his government thus locking a win for his daughter.
The constituency which polled in the first phase of elections on April 11, created news when the EC was forced to use as many as 12 EVMs in each booth to accommodate all the 185 candidates - a first for the EC.

While this is not the first time so many candidates have contested in the state, in 1996 nearly 500 candidates had contested to highlight the acute drinking water crisis.

Historical trend: 

While Nizamabad has majorly voted for the Congress since 1952, the split of Telangana from its parent state of Andhra Pradesh due to the emergence of TRS has given the favour towards TRS in 2014. 

Congress' Madhu Yashki Goud who has won twice from the constituency, in 2014 and 2009, faced a tough challenge from sitting MP K Kavitha - who herself battled anti-incumbency and major farmer revolt.
