In response to the recent polarising statement by Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, BSP supremo Mayawati accused her and the BJP of threatening the Muslim voters in the state. She said that the party and its leaders are threatening the community by saying that their work will not be done if they do not vote for the BJP. She also lashed out at UP CM Yogi Adityanath on his comment to those showing black flags in his poll campaign rally.

Her reaction comes a day after BJP's Maneka Gandhi in her poll campaign in Sultanpur declared that she is going to win with Muslims or without Muslims. But if she wins without Muslims, she will not feel like helping them when they come for work-related matters after elections.

Taking to Twitter she expressed her disappointment on Maneka Gandhi's as well as Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath's remark:

"After Union Minister Shrimati Maneka Gandhi's threat to the voters, now UP CM has threatened the voters who showed black flags or banners, that they will remain unemployed for a lifetime. This not only shows the arrogance of the BJP but also they anti-people attitude of the party. This election it is necessary to defeat it."

Mayawati's reaction comes at a time when she has stoked controversy after her speech at Deoband in Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where she appealed the Muslim community to vote for the BSP-SP-RLD gathbandhan and not for the Congress.

Maneka had on Friday in her campaign at Sultanpur, from where she is contesting said: "Dill khatta ho jata hai, fir lagta hai, choro kya farq parta hai" (Heart store grudges, then I also think who cares, let it be.)

"I am winning for sure but if I win without the support of Muslims then I would feel really bad and after that when Muslims come to me for work then I feel there is no point of helping them, it is not that we are like Mahatma Gandhi that we continue to help without expecting anything in return," she added.

Following Maneka's comment, the EC has sent a show-cause notice to her asking her to explain her comment. Earlier the EC had also sent notice to Mayawati and Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on their polarising speeches ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections that was held on April 11.

Uttar Pradesh goes on polls in all the seven phases of the General elections 2019. Eight constituencies will poll in the second phase of the elections.
