New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third time on Sunday, June 2. The BJP has secured majority in Arunachal Pradesh by winning 46 seats in the 60-member assembly. The NPP won 5 seats, NCP won 3 seats and the Congress won a lone seat. 3 seats were won by independent candidates.

Counting of votes for 50 assembly seats in the northeastern state began at 6 am on Sunday, despite heavy rain in several pockets of the state. Despite rain, hundreds of supporters of various political parties were seen standing near the counting centres.

BJP Won 10 Seats Unopposed

The BJP enjoys an edge as it has already won 10 seats unopposed in the 60-member assembly. Assembly elections were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in the first phase on April 19.

The 10 seats won by BJP include Lumla, Kalaktang, Koloriang, Nacho, Likabali, Basar, Along (West), Along (East). Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein have already won their respective seats.

What Happened in 2019 Assembly Polls

In the last assembly elections, the BJP registered a massive victory by winning 41 seats in the state. In 2019 assembly elections, Janata Dal (United) bagged seven, the National People's Party (NPP) five, Congress four, and the Peoples Party of Arunachal (PPA) one. Two independents also won in the Assembly polls. All except one Congress MLA, former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, joined the BJP later.
