Bhupesh Baghel resigns as Chhattisgarh chief minister after Congress rout
Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel resigned as chief minister on Sunday night after the party lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly polls.
"I respect the mandate of the people. Congress will play a positive role in the opposition," Baghel told reporters outside Raj Bhavan after submitting his resignation to Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed five rallies in Chhattisgarh after announcement of Assembly polls, targeting Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel over the alleged Mahadev app scam and accusing the Congress of appeasement politics, while calling the Bharatiya Janata Party's promises as "Modi's guarantees".

Results won't have impact on INDIA bloc: Sharad Pawar
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the outcome of the Assembly elections in four states will not have any impact on the INDIA bloc, which comprises more than 25 opposition parties led by the Congress.
After initial rounds of counting, the BJP seems set to snatch power from the Congress in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and retain it in Madhya Pradesh.
“I don't think this will have any impact on the INDIA alliance. We will be meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in Delhi. We will speak to those who know the ground reality. We will be able to comment on it after the meeting only,” Pawar said per PTI.
"Earlier, it was assumed the BRS would retain Telangana. However, after Rahul Gandhi's rally, which received a huge response, we realised there will be change in the state," he further said as Congress is leading in 64 seats out of 119 in Telangana.

5 ex-ministers renominated by BJP despite previous defeat leading in Chhattisgarh poll counting
Five former ministers who lost the 2018 Chhattisgarh assembly elections and were re-nominated by the BJP for the polls this time were leading in their respective seats as vote counting was underway on Sunday, according to the Election Commission data.
Bhaiyyalal Rajwade (Baikunthpur), Amar Agrawal (Bilaspur), Rajesh Munat (Raipur City West), Kedar Kashyap (Narayanpur) and Dayaldas Baghel (Nawagarh) were ministers in the previous BJP government in the state.
They lost the 2018 assembly polls, but were leading this time against their nearest Congress rivals, as per the latest trends.
However, former ministers Premprakash Pandey (Bhilai Nagar) and Mahesh Gagda (Bijapur), who were also re-nominated this time by the BJP despite losing the previous election, were trailing.
Senior BJP leader and former chief minister Raman Singh (Rajnandgaon), two other former ministers of the BJP - Brijmohan Agrawal (Raipur city south) and Ajay Chandrakar (Kurud), all three incumbent MLAs, were leading from their respective seats.
Another former minister Punnulal Mohile, a senior Scheduled Caste community leader from the BJP who is a six-term MLA and a four-time MP, was renominated from his traditional seat Mungeli this time.
He was trailing by 1,211 votes against Congress' Sanjeet Banarjee.

Chhattisgarh Assembly Election Results 2023: Former CM Raman Singh, state BJP chief Arun Sao leading
Senior BJP leader and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh was leading over Congress' Girish Dewangan in Rajnandgaon seat by 13,279 votes after fourth round of counting of votes for the state assembly elections, as per the Election Commission.
Chhattisgarh BJP chief Arun Sao was also leading in Lormi seat against Congress' Thaneshwar Sahu by 9,106 votes after fifth round of counting, while former Union minister Vishnu Deo Sai was ahead in Kunkuri seat against Congress candidate UD Minj by 7,813 votes after eighth round of counting.
BJP MP Gomti Sai was leading in Pathalgaon seat against Congress' Rampukar Singh by 6,078 votes after fifth round of counting, as per the EC.
BJP leader and former minister Ramvichar Netam was ahead in Ramanujganj seat against Congress' Ajay Tirkey by 4,874 votes.
Former IAS officer OP Choudhary was leading in Raigarh seat against Congress' Prakash Nayak by 7,435 votes, while former minister Amar Agrawal was ahead in Bilaspur seat against Congress' Shailesh Pandey by 6,364 votes.
In Raipur City North seat, former minister Rajest Munat Agrawal was leading by 4,643 votes against Congress' Vikas Upadhyay Pandey.
In Narayanpur seat, former minister Kedar Kashyap was leading by 3,515 votes against Congress' Chandan Kashyap, as per the EC.

Chhattisgarh: BJP leading in 28 seats, Congress ahead in 25 seats
The BJP was ahead in 28 seats and the ruling Congress was leading in 25 seats in elections to the Chhattisgarh assembly, the Election Commission said.
The Hamar Raj Party and the Communist Party of India (CPI) were ahead in one seat each, as per the EC.
Counting of votes in elections to the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly started at 8 am on Sunday, with security personnel maintaining a strict vigil in counting centres in the state's 33 districts, including those affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), a poll official said.
The elections were held in two phases on November 7 and 17. Voter turnout stood at 76.31 per cent.
Postal ballots were counted between 8 am and 8.30 am, after which the counting of votes through EVMs began in the presence of officials and political parties' authorised agents, he said.

Patan is set to witness a high-stakes battle where Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel will face a stiff challenge from his nephew Vijay Baghel, a Lok Sabha MP from Durg.
BJP’s Raman Singh, the incumbent Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and a six-term MLA, is facing a strong challenge in his Rajnandgaon constituency from Giris Devangan, who is considered to be a close confidant of CM Baghel.
The Ambikapur constituency in north Chhattisgarh is a tribal-dominated region and is set to witness a fierce electoral battle between incumbent Deputy Chief Minister T S Singh Deo and BJP’s Rajesh Agarwal.

The Exit Polls released by various agencies on Thursday point towards a close fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with a clear edge to Congress.
The political fate of a total of 958 candidates – 827 men, 130 women and one transgender person – contesting 90 seats.
