Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel resigned as chief minister on Sunday night after the party lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly polls.  

"I respect the mandate of the people. Congress will play a positive role in the opposition," Baghel told reporters outside Raj Bhavan after submitting his resignation to Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.

As Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sweeps Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel said, “I respect people's mandate. Even today I accept this result with my head bowed. There is satisfaction in the fact that in the last 5 years, I have fulfilled every promise made to you, tried to give more than the promise and served Chhattisgarh Mahtari to the best of my ability. The expectations and aspirations of the public are great, I respect the wisdom of the public.”

As Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) sweeps Chhattisgarh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Tribal, poor, farmer sisters and brothers of Chhattisgarh have expressed faith in PM Modi and blessed BJP with a huge majority.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed five rallies in Chhattisgarh after announcement of Assembly polls, targeting Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel over the alleged Mahadev app scam and accusing the Congress of appeasement politics, while calling the Bharatiya Janata Party's promises as "Modi's guarantees".

Against predictions by most exit polls that the ruling Congress had an edge in the state, the BJP, which banked heavily on the charisma of the PM, was leading on 54 seats in the 90-member Assembly. The Congress is leading on 36 seats.

"I would like to credit the guarantees of PM Modi for this victory," said BJP MLA Brijmohan Agarwal as the party is set to sweep the Chhattisgarh elections.

In a crushing defeat for Congress in Raipur district, the Bharatiya Janata Party swept all seven assembly seats in the district. The saffron party emerged victorious in Raipur North, Raipur South, Raipur West, Raipur Rural, Dharsiwa, Abhanpur and Arang.
 

As Bharatiya Janata Party crosses the halfway mark in Chhattisgarh as per Election Commission's latest trends, BJP co-in-charge in Chhattisgarh, Nitin Nabin took a swipe at the ruling Congress party referring it to be corrupt. The BJP is currently leading in 55 seats while Congress is in 32.

Responding to the latest trends, Nitin Nabin said, “BJP will form the government with a clear majority in Chhattisgarh. The Congress government did the work of looting the people of the state, and the people have replied to this today.”

"The people of Chhattisgarh have realised that the Congress government is corrupt and they have cheated the people," he added.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the outcome of the Assembly elections in four states will not have any impact on the INDIA bloc, which comprises more than 25 opposition parties led by the Congress.

After initial rounds of counting, the BJP seems set to snatch power from the Congress in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and retain it in Madhya Pradesh.

“I don't think this will have any impact on the INDIA alliance. We will be meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in Delhi. We will speak to those who know the ground reality. We will be able to comment on it after the meeting only,” Pawar said per PTI. 

"Earlier, it was assumed the BRS would retain Telangana. However, after Rahul Gandhi's rally, which received a huge response, we realised there will be change in the state," he further said as Congress is leading in 64 seats out of 119 in Telangana.

According to the Election Commission, the BJP is leading in 55 seats out of 90. Congress is trailing with a lead in 32 seats.

BJP workers had clearly said that "Modi magic" will yield results and today's results are a symbol of that," Union Minister Smriti Irani said as BJP gains lead in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and MP. 

“The kind of indecent remarks that the Gandhi family made on Narendra Modi, the kind of taunts the Opposition leaders hurled at him proved costly for the Gandhi family,” she further said. 

Political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla says, "First of all, I would like to congratulate Congress on winning the Telangana elections. But Congress needs to introspect on why they lost in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan... I think the biggest reason for this loss is abusing Sanatan Dharma and talking about the OBC census, especially in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where it was not a factor. If we look at Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan is an OBC CM..."

On BJP's lead in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Union Minister and party leader Piyush Goyal says, "...people of four elections of the state have given their blessings to Prime Minister Modi. If you look at it closely, this is not an ordinary win. In Madhya Pradesh, BJP received a historic lead. In Rajasthan, all trends were left behind and BJP won with an absolute majority. We were written off in Chhattisgarh but we BJP registered a fabulous victory there...In Telangana, BJP won just one seat last time. But going from there to double digits makes it clear that the faith of people in PM Modi is increasing day after day..."

BJP leading in 54 of 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh, Congress is ahead in 33 seats as per trends, according to the latest Election Commission trends.

Five former ministers who lost the 2018 Chhattisgarh assembly elections and were re-nominated by the BJP for the polls this time were leading in their respective seats as vote counting was underway on Sunday, according to the Election Commission data.

Bhaiyyalal Rajwade (Baikunthpur), Amar Agrawal (Bilaspur), Rajesh Munat (Raipur City West), Kedar Kashyap (Narayanpur) and Dayaldas Baghel (Nawagarh) were ministers in the previous BJP government in the state.

They lost the 2018 assembly polls, but were leading this time against their nearest Congress rivals, as per the latest trends.

However, former ministers Premprakash Pandey (Bhilai Nagar) and Mahesh Gagda (Bijapur), who were also re-nominated this time by the BJP despite losing the previous election, were trailing.

Senior BJP leader and former chief minister Raman Singh (Rajnandgaon), two other former ministers of the BJP - Brijmohan Agrawal (Raipur city south) and Ajay Chandrakar (Kurud), all three incumbent MLAs, were leading from their respective seats.

Another former minister Punnulal Mohile, a senior Scheduled Caste community leader from the BJP who is a six-term MLA and a four-time MP, was renominated from his traditional seat Mungeli this time.

He was trailing by 1,211 votes against Congress' Sanjeet Banarjee.

BJP leading in 53 of 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh, and Congress is ahead in 35 seats as per trends, according to the Election Commission of India. 

The BJP surged ahead of Congress in Chhattisgarh, leading in 53 of the 90 assembly seats, while the grand old party led in 36 seats, as per latest information available with the Election Commission.

In Patan, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel of Congress was leading over BJP's Vijay Baghel by 164 votes after four rounds of counting of votes. There will be 18 rounds, a poll official said.

Incumbent Deputy Chief Minister and Congress candidate TS Singh Deo trailing in Ambikapur by a margin of 1623 votes after the fourth round of counting, garnering a total of 18240 votes so far. 

Incumbent Chief Minister and Congress candidate Bhupesh Baghel leading from Patan by a margin of 1452 votes after the fifth round of counting, garnering a total of 26854 votes so far.

Senior BJP leader and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh was leading over Congress' Girish Dewangan in Rajnandgaon seat by 13,279 votes after fourth round of counting of votes for the state assembly elections, as per the Election Commission.

Chhattisgarh BJP chief Arun Sao was also leading in Lormi seat against Congress' Thaneshwar Sahu by 9,106 votes after fifth round of counting, while former Union minister Vishnu Deo Sai was ahead in Kunkuri seat against Congress candidate UD Minj by 7,813 votes after eighth round of counting.

BJP MP Gomti Sai was leading in Pathalgaon seat against Congress' Rampukar Singh by 6,078 votes after fifth round of counting, as per the EC.

BJP leader and former minister Ramvichar Netam was ahead in Ramanujganj seat against Congress' Ajay Tirkey by 4,874 votes.

Former IAS officer OP Choudhary was leading in Raigarh seat against Congress' Prakash Nayak by 7,435 votes, while former minister Amar Agrawal was ahead in Bilaspur seat against Congress' Shailesh Pandey by 6,364 votes.

In Raipur City North seat, former minister Rajest Munat Agrawal was leading by 4,643 votes against Congress' Vikas Upadhyay Pandey.

In Narayanpur seat, former minister Kedar Kashyap was leading by 3,515 votes against Congress' Chandan Kashyap, as per the EC.

The BJP was ahead in 52 seats and the ruling Congress was leading in 36 seats in elections to the Chhattisgarh assembly, the Election Commission said.

The Gondvana Gantantra Party (GGP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) were ahead in one seat each, as per the EC. 

BJP leading in 48 of 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh, and Congress is ahead in 40 seats as per trends, according to the Election Commission of India. 

Chhattisgarh Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu was trailing in Durg Rural seat by 1,365 votes against BJP's Lalit Chandrakar after first round of counting of votes for the state assembly elections on Sunday, as per the Election Commission.

State Congress chief Deepak Baij was behind by 518 votes against BJP's Vinayak Goyal in Chitrakot seat, according to the EC.

On the election results of four states, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav says, "According to the initial trends, BJP is leading in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and Congress is forming the government in Telangana. There is a close contest in Chhattisgarh. Therefore, I feel it is too early to say who is winning. The picture will be clear by 1 pm...We hope that Congress will win the elections...''

BJP leading in 46 of 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh, and Congress is ahead in 40 seats as per trends, according to the Election Commission of India.

The anger of people has been reflected in voting. BJP will form the government in all three states with an absolute majority..."

As Election Commission trends show Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in Chhattisgarh, former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Raman Singh said, "People have rejected Bhupesh Baghel's government."

He told the media that people are impressed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development agenda. On being asked if he will become Chief Minister, Singh said, "It will be decided by the party."

As per the trends in Chhattisgarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading on 43 seats while Congress is leading on 39 seats till 11:10 am, as per the latest Election Commission of India data. Both the Hamar Raj Party (HRP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) are leading in 1 seat each.

As per the initial trends in Chhattisgarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party is leading on 41 seats while Congress is leading on 36 seats till 10:55 am, as per the latest Election Commission of India data.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is leading from Patan seat by a margin of 187 votes. He is pitted against BJP candidate Vijay Baghel.

The BJP was ahead in 36 seats and the ruling Congress was leading in 23 seats in elections to the Chhattisgarh assembly, the Election Commission said.

The Hamar Raj Party and the Communist Party of India (CPI) were ahead in one seat each, as per the EC.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leading in 34 of 90 assembly seats in Chhattisgarh while the Congress is ahead in 28 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. Both the Hamar Raj Party (HRP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) are leading in one seat each, respectively.

The BJP was ahead in 28 seats and the ruling Congress was leading in 25 seats in elections to the Chhattisgarh assembly, the Election Commission said.

Counting of votes in elections to the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly started at 8 am on Sunday, with security personnel maintaining a strict vigil in counting centres in the state's 33 districts, including those affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), a poll official said.

The elections were held in two phases on November 7 and 17. Voter turnout stood at 76.31 per cent.

Postal ballots were counted between 8 am and 8.30 am, after which the counting of votes through EVMs began in the presence of officials and political parties' authorised agents, he said. 

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel trailing from Patan Assembly constituency where the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) Vijay Baghel is leading. So far, Vijay Bagel has secured 11,069 votes while CM Bagel has got 10,585.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fought the Chhattisgarh elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is leading in 27 seals while Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress is ahead in 24 seas. Both the Hamar Raj Party and CPI are leading in one seat, respectively. It is worth nothing that seven Congress ministers are trailing.

The highest VIP seat in Chhattisgarh is in the Durg district, known as Patan. Interestingly, Chhattisgarh's Chief Minister, affectionately called 'Kaka,' Bhupesh Baghel, is also a legislator from this constituency.  Notably, in an attempt to challenge CM Baghel here, the BJP has strategically fielded his nephew, who is currently a Member of Parliament from Durg and had previously defeated Baghel in the 2008 elections.

Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh: On the counting of votes, BJP leader Chhattisgarh BJP President Arun Sao says, "The Congress party is scared & nervous. The people of Chhattisgarh have rejected them."

Patan is set to witness a high-stakes battle where Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel will face a stiff challenge from his nephew Vijay Baghel, a Lok Sabha MP from Durg.

BJP’s Raman Singh, the incumbent Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and a six-term MLA, is facing a strong challenge in his Rajnandgaon constituency from Giris Devangan, who is considered to be a close confidant of CM Baghel.

The Ambikapur constituency in north Chhattisgarh is a tribal-dominated region and is set to witness a fierce electoral battle between incumbent Deputy Chief Minister T S Singh Deo and BJP’s Rajesh Agarwal. 

The Raipur City South Assembly constituency is considered a stronghold of the BJP, and has been held by Brijmohan Agrawal, a seven-term MLA, since 1990.

The Konta Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh, a reserved seat for Scheduled Tribes (ST), will see the final battle unraveling on December 3, between incumbent Industry and Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma of the Congress, Soyam Muka of the BJP, and Manish Kunjam of the CPI-M.

The polling for the Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections was held in two phases on 7 November and 17 November with candidates from Congress, BJP, BSP, and others in the fray. The Exit Polls released by various agencies on Thursday point towards a close fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with a clear edge to Congress.

The political fate of a total of 958 candidates – 827 men, 130 women and one transgender person – contesting 90 seats.

While the main fight is between bitter rivals BJP and the Congress, a three-way contest is on the cards in several seats of the Bilaspur division where former CM Ajit Jogi’s party and the BSP have pockets of influence. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has also been focusing on seats in the division.
