DMK President MK Stalin on Monday paid tribute to his father and party patriarch late M Karunanidhi (Kalaignar) on his 95th birth anniversary. Stalin, along with his party cadres, showered the colossal photo of the demised leader with flowers.
Karunanidhi, who was Tamil Nadu's longest-serving chief minister, breathed his last in August last year at the age of 94 after a period of prolonged illness.
Paying tribute to the late DMK Chief M K Karunanidhi, his son M.K Stalin has tweeted
"Tamil Nadu's ever-circulating headline is now its ever-reviving force!
O Chief! Your birthday means the birthday of Tamil Nadu. This is the day that we vow to accomplish the missions you wished to fulfill. Please bless us. My humble salute to the Kalaignar"
Kalaignar who was born in Thirukkuvalai on June 3, 1924, a small village in Thanjavur District, was drawn to the Dravidian movement led by reformist leader Periyar EVR as a teen. He rose to fame for the famous "Kallakudi agitation" in 1953, lying over railway tracks. M Karunanidhi never personally lost an election since 1957 and was 48 when he first became Tamil Nadu's chief minister.
One year after Kalaignar's death, Stalin vindicated himself by winning 37 out of 38 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu.
The 66-year-old leader single-handedly toured the state and led the election campaign with tailor-made programs to interact with people at grassroots.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance in the state, which includes the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) along with several other smaller parties has been able to make a clean sweep in the state. The AIADMK, which partnered the BJP for the general elections, has managed to win just one Lok Sabha and won nine seats in the by-polls.
