PM Modi tweets on Haryana election result, hints at BJP forming govt

Writing on Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people and workers of Haryana BJP, also hinting at BJP forming the next government in Haryana

Writing on microblogging website Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at BJP forming the next government in Haryana. Besides thanking the people and the Haryana BJP workers, he asserted that they would continue to work for the state's progress. This tweet comes at a juncture when sources told Republic that Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has sought time from Governor Satyadev Arya to stake claim to form the government. As per sources, the BJP is confident of securing the support of Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party (JJP). Currently, the BJP is ahead in 40 seats, followed by Congress with 31 seats. Moreover, JJP is expected to bag 10 seats.

Congress scrambles to form a government

Earlier, it was reported that all Haryana Members of Legislative Assembly were set to fly to Delhi. Congress President Sonia Gandhi, as per the sources, has given the green signal to senior party leader and former CM Bhupinder Hooda to initiate talks with Independents and the JJP to form the government. Reportedly, Hooda has already contacted Chautala to solicit his support. However, the latter made it clear that any decision would be taken only after the declaration of results. He opined that his party would be the kingmaker in a scenario where both BJP and Congress were unable to cross 40 seats.

Assembly polls

As per the Election Commission of India figures, Haryana recorded a voter turnout of 68.47%. The total strength of the Haryana Assembly is 90, out of which 17 seats have been reserved for the SC category. In total, Haryana has 1.82 crore registered voters, out of which 1.7 lakh are service voters. 0.38 lakh ballot units, 0.25 lakh control units, and 0.27 lakh VVPATs were used in the state.
