Telangana Assembly Election 2023 battle is getting intense with parties taking jibes at each other and making severe allegations to claim the throne. In the latest development, The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) against the unlawful use of ‘Deepfake’ technology in the Telangana Elections campaign by the Congress party.The letter BRS wrote to the ECI. In a letter addressed to the poll panel, grave concerns were raised by the BRS regarding the alleged misuse of ‘Deepfake’ technology and Artificial Intelligence in the ongoing elections of the Telangana State Legislative Assembly, 2023.In a letter to the ECI, BRS alleged, “According to sources, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is involved in the creation and dissemination of fake audio and video content through the use of ‘Deepfake’ technology and artificial intelligence. The fabricated content reportedly targets prominent leaders, including the CM of Telangana K. Chandrashekar Rao, and IT Minister K.Τ. Rama Rao, Minister for Finance Harish Rao, Member of Legislative Council of Telangana Kavitha Kalvakuntla, and other contesting candidates of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party.”BRS makes a scathing allegation against Telangana CongressDeepfake technology, a type of Artificial Intelligence, is capable of creating hyper-realistic videos or audio recordings of individuals saying or doing things they never actually said or did. This raises concerns about the potential use of such technology to create convincing fake content that could mislead and harm the public, the letter read.The letter emphasized the gravity of using deepfake technology in an election campaign, deeming it unlawful, unacceptable, and criminal in nature. It pointed out that such deceptive practices have the potential to unfairly influence the outcome of an election, with no legal distinction between ‘Deepfake’ content and other forms of fake content. All forms of fake content are considered equally unlawful and unacceptable in an election campaign, constituting corrupt practices.Given the illegal and dangerous nature of these activities, the letter to the ECI called for immediate intervention to prevent further harm to the fair conduct of the election. Anticipating the likely circulation of manipulated content across various social media platforms, the letter earnestly requested a prompt and thorough investigation into the matter. The BRS, in its letter, urged authorities to take necessary actions to identify and restrain the TPCC and its various legal, non-legal, and invisible handles from creating and disseminating misleading content in any media format, including but not limited to images, videos, and memes.
