Biggest box office clashes in Bollywood
Sholay VS Jai Santoshi Maa
One of the biggest clashes in the industry was between this Sholay and Jai Santoshi Maa. Both the films were released on the same day, August 15, 1975. It was between the movie of the century versus one of the biggest devotional movies ever in Bollywood. In the start, Jai Santoshi Maa was a clear winner but in the end, Sholay took over, and the rest is history.
Gadar: Ek Prem Khata VS Lagaan
Two of the most anticipated movies in the industry were released on the same day, June 15, 2001. Both the films were a period drama, While Lagan was set during the British rule, Gadar, on the other hand, takes places during the India-Pakistan separation. Aamir Khan starring Lagaan reportedly collected ₹25 crores and made it to top five nominations for The Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards for 2001. Sunny Deol starring Gadar, did better than Lagaan at the box office. It reportedly collected ₹43 crores.
Om Shanti Om VS Saawariya
In December 2007, Shah Rukh Khan and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali competed against each other at the big screens. Saawariya marks the debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Om Shanti Om was the debut film of Deepika Padukone. Salman Khan was seen in a cameo appearance in both the films, briefly in Saawariya. While Om Shanti Om was a success at the box office, Saawariya did not much the expectations.
Bajirao Mastani VS Dilwale
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shah Rukh Khan faced each other for the second time in 2015. Bajirao Mastani stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Besides Shah Rukh Khan, Dilwale stars Varun Dhawan, Kajol and Kriti Sanon. Both the movies performed well at the box office. Dilwale reportedly collected ₹148.72 crores. Bajirao Mastani beat Dilwale as it reportedly collected ₹184.20 crores.
Rustom VS Mohenja Daro
Akshay Kumar’s Rustom and Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro clashed on Independence Day 2016 and the result was not delightful. While Rustom fared better, Mohenjo Daro faced criticism from audiences as well as the critics and failed to succeed at the box-office. Akshay won his first National Award for his performances in Rustom.
