Boman Irani: The actor's journey from his first play to movies

A man of many talents; Boman Irani is a popular Bollywood actor who has been a part of movies like 3 Idiots, Sanju, Jolly LLB, among others. The actor, in a recent media event, offered a heartful rendition to the song- My way. The actor's impromptu performance was appreciated with applause from the audience. The 59-year-old, in an earlier interview, shared his journey from being a waiter to a popular Bollywood actor.

Irani started out doing petty chores at a palatial hotel in Mumbai. He then took up the job of a waiter in one of the best restaurants. He remembers imitating a fake French accent at the restaurant, and how everyone was impressed by his imitation. But his mother's sudden demise forced Boman to look after his paternal snack shop. He led the shop for 14 years until he realised his real passion and switched his career to sports photography. He started earning money by capturing pictures of school, races and athletic matches. He eventually set up his photo studio. Things changed for him when one-day Shiamak Davar visited his studio for a photoshoot. He introduced Irani to Alyque Padamsee, who helped Irani bag his first musical play. In the musical play, Irani played the role of a pimp. He even garnered whistles from the audience for his special song- The Pimp Song. He next played the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the play Mahatma vs Gandhi.
At the age of 35, the actor started his Bollywood career with Rahul Bose directorial Everybody Says I'm Fine. After his debut, the actor featured in movies like Don, Heyy Babyy, 3 Idiots, Munnabhai M.B.B.S, among others. He is now gearing up to reprise his role of Batuk Patel from the Housefull franchise. The fourth installment of Housefull, titled Housefull 4, is all set to release this Diwali.
