Chhapaak is reportedly based on the life of Laxmi Aggarwal. In 2005, she was attacked with acid by a man for rejecting his romantic advances. The attack left her with terrible scars on her face. Laxmi underwent surgeries and was in the hospital for months. However, she was undeterred in her efforts to campaign vigorously against acid attacks. Her campaigning was so effective that the Supreme Court of India ensured that regulations were in place to regulate the sale and usage of acids and that speedy justice was delivered to acid attack victims and survivors.

The film is Deepika Padukone's first as a producer

The film also features Vikrant Massey and is directed by Meghna Gulzar. Meghna's previous directorial, the 2018 Alia Bhatt-starrer Raazi, was a critical and commercial success.
